Breast Lift – Restore Breast Volume & Shape

Breast Lift Surgery

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted. The procedure raises sagging breasts by correcting and modifying the size, contour, and elevation of the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

A woman’s breasts often loses their youthful shape and firmness due to pregnancy, breast feeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity, and heredity. Over time the areola can also become enlarged and a breast lift will reduce this as well. Breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller, breast augmentation can often be done at the same time as your breast lift or may require a separate operation. Dr. Azad will assist you in making this decision.

FAQs about Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, raises the breasts creating a more youthful contour. This procedure is a solution for drooping breasts, as it removes excess skin and tightens the skin creating a perkier contour with firmer breasts. It also reposition the nipple for a more natural look. This procedure does not increase the size of the breasts; the solution for larger breasts is a breast augmentation. For patients with sagging breast and looking to increase their size, an augmentation mastopexy (breast augmentation and breast lift combined) can be performed.
For a breast lift there are several types of incisions. The least invasive is the crescent lift, which involves a crescent of skin removed at the top of the nipple to improve it’s positioning. For women with low hanging breasts, the lollipop lift (vertical scar lift) or anchor lift, is the most effective. The lollipop lift involves a lollipop-shaped incision that surrounds the nipple and a vertical incision made down the crease of the breast. An anchor lift is similar to the lollipop lift, however the incision continues along the breast crease, creating an anchor shape. Though the anchor lift is more invasive, it allows for more contouring of the breast.
An augmentation mastopexy (breast augmentation and breast lift combined) can be performed in one procedure or staged in two surgeries at our San Diego center. By performing the procedures together, there is less recovery time for the patient, however there is an increased risk of decreased blood supply to the nipple. For example, a patient with greater sagging, thinner breast tissue, and wanting a larger implant, it is safer to stage the two surgeries in order to get a more accurate result. There are many variables that determine which course of action is best for you and it is important to discuss all options with your plastic surgeon.
It is recommended for women to be done having children before performing a breast lift. Pregnancy will change the shape and contour of your breast and nipples and cause your skin to be stretched and altered again. In addition, the ducts to the nipple are often disturbed during the procedure. Some milk may come out after pregnancy, but often not in sufficient quantities.
Recovery time is highly dependent on the patient and how their body responds to breast lift surgery. Before leaving the center, you will be given specific instructions on how to care for your breasts, medications to use, and when to follow-up with Dr. Azad. You will wear a support bra 24 hours a day for several weeks and will need to clean and apply ointment to the incision sites as directed. Patients are normally able to return to work and light activities after about a week. During the first week, it is important to avoid bending over or any activities that put unnecessary pressure on the chest. Exercise and normal activity can resume typically eight weeks after your breast lift surgery.
